A man is behind bars in Emanuel County after a fatal shooting took place at Flat's Lounge on Bishop Chapel Road, around 4 a.m. Sunday.

Emanuel County investigators and EMS personnel responded to the shooting to find 20-year-old Divante Coney killed by a single gunshot wound inside the club. Deputies secured the scene and requested assistance from sheriff's investigators and the GBI.

Investigators say as the scene was being processed, a crowd of people began to gather at the Huddle House in Swainsboro. While patrolling the area, Swainsboro PD came into contact with David Lee Sharpe Jr., of Vidalia. He was arrested when he tried to conceal and dispose of a stolen handgun that he had on him as officers approached. Sharpe was also found to be a convicted felon, and was prohibited from legally possessing any firearm.

Meanwhile, investigators and GBI agents conducted numerous interviews with witnesses who were present at the time of the shooting. They also reviewed several items of physical evidence. After presenting their findings and consulting with the DA's office, additional charges were taken against Sharpe. He's been charged with the felony crimes of malice murder, aggravated assault, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and theft by receiving stolen property. He is currently being held at the Emanuel County Jail without bond.

Sheriff J. Tyson Stephens believes this death was motivated by criminal gang activity and was an isolated incident. He stated that his office will not tolerate the increasing violence that seems to be connected to gangs and drugs in the area. He further said that state and federal law enforcement and prosecuting partners have been asked to assist in investigations and the sharing of information.

The sheriff wishes to applaud the quick actions of Swainsboro Police officers in Sharpe's arrest, and the seize of the handgun, and also to show his appreciation to his investigators as well as GBI agents for the long hours already put into this ongoing investigation.

Officials say there is a possibility of more arrests. Anyone with information related to or helpful to this case is asked to call the ECSO Investigations Division at 478.237.6360, the sheriff's office at 478.237.7526, or the Region 12 GBI Office at 478.374.6988.
