Help is on the way for children who have autism in Chatham County. Today hundreds of parents, teachers and medical professionals attended an autism workshop at the Savannah International Trade and Convention Center.
Dr. Vincent Carbone, a leading expert in helping autistic children learn how to communicate, spoke to the group today.
Fifty percent of autistic children never learn to speak, and this conference is trying to change that.
"It's extremely important in Savannah to bring resources to teach people in our community about autism and related disabilities and teaching our children with autism how to talk," said Sydney Philson with Andrew's Answer, a local autism support organization.
Currently one in every 166 children is diagnosed with autism. The conference runs until Friday.
