SOUTH CAROLINA (WTOC) - South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley gave an update Tuesday afternoon on coastal communities in the state.
She said they are moving from a hurricane event to a flood event.
She is spending the day along the coast in places like Edisto, Beaufort and Fripp Island. While the devastation there is great, she said she is so proud of how South Carolinians are coming together in this tough time.
"Don't ever say South Carolina is not resilient. I was thinking about this today. We have gone through two winter storms, a thousand year flood, two fire instances, and now a hurricane that is turning into a flood and boy, do we keep bouncing back time and time again," said Gov. Haley. "The fast order in which we try to evacuate was extremely important because it was a safety issue. Our job is not to make sure you get back in record time."
Governor Haley spoke specifically to Hilton Head Island's situation as well, saying they are working with local officials there to help them set up two more shelters.
She said she will also check out how badly U.S. 278 is backed up and see what they can do to alleviate the congestion.
