Wreck, Spill Closes Chatham Parkway

An accident and spill late this afternoon has a big chunk of Chatham Parkway shut down. Just before 4pm, a lawn care truck hit a car which was trying to get on the entrance ramp to Interstate 16.

Two people were sent to the hospital, and the haz-mat unit was called out to clean up fertilizer and weed killer that spilled onto the parkway. Police blocked off northbound traffic along Chatham Parkway all the way to Ogeechee Road.

"I-16 is unaffected except for traffic trying to get onto Chatham Parkway," said Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department spokesman Bucky Burnsed. "We're diverting that traffic and making them stay on I-16."

The spills have been contained, but police decided to keep the road blocked during cleanup. As of 6pm, the road was open.
