Training to Help Officers with Mentally Ill Suspects

Savannah police are learning better ways to deal with the mentally ill when responding to a call. Representatives from the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill will be in Savannah training officers next week.

Police often deal with mentally ill criminals who are thought to be dangerous and this training will help them be better equipped to deal with these tough situations.

"If they recognize it as a mental health issue that they're not making those decisions on they're own, that they are out of control or psychotic because of mental illness, they can be helped with treatment instead of going to jail," explained Diane Reeder, the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill's education director.

Police will go through the week-long training course starting Monday.
