Detectives with the Statesboro Police Department are investigating a fatal shooting near Georgia Southern University overnight.

It happened around 12:30 a.m. Wednesday at Campus Crossings apartments, an off campus apartment complex on Lanier Drive that houses both students and non-students.

An Eagle Alert was sent out at 1:15 a.m. to inform Georgia Southern students of the situation.

Officials later confirmed that one man died as a result of the shooting.

According to the Statesboro Police Department, officers were patrolling the area of Lanier Drive when they heard and responded to the sounds of gun shots in the area of Campus Crossings apartments. When officers arrived, they located a subject with a gunshot wound and began to render aid.

Bulloch County Sheriff’s Office deputies and Georgia Southern University Police Department officers also responded to assist.

The subject was transported to the East Georgia Regional Medical Center where he died from his injury.

There is no word on a suspect or suspects at this time.

We caught up with a few students to ask about their concerns.

"Maybe when they can keep a good eye out around this neighborhood just for a little while, and maybe I will feel a little safer," said Senior, Jazmine Hicks.

Hicks woke up to the homicide at her door step.

"My roommates were outside on the balcony, and I saw flashing lights," she said.

Hicks wasn't the only person still disturbed by the deadly shooting at her home away from home. Another young woman, who lives next door, says police lights are a pretty regular thing.

"I just know there was some shots fired last night. There was also a robbery off campus, and I think those two were involved. I actually know those guys who live in that apartment, so it is just scary to see them getting involved in that kind of stuff, I guess," she said.

She claims this is familiar to her.

"Just seeing the swarm of police cars come, it honestly happens a lot out here."

Detectives of Statesboro Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Bureau are handling the investigation.
