SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Turning the Forsyth Fountain purple to raise awareness for domestic violence.

Wednesday, Savannah's SAFE Shelter held a vigil to kick off National Domestic Violence Awareness month.

The fountain was dyed purple early Wednesday and that evening, many gathered for the “Silent Witness” display.

It's made up of 12 life-sized silhouettes representing actual victims, dating back to 2011. Each wearing a “plaque for hearts” with the story of the person represented.

"Everything that we do, the goal is that a victim somewhere, which is suffering in silence, is going to hear it and know that there is help available. And all they have to do is pick up that phone,” said SAFE Shelter Executive Director Cheryl Branch.
