The McIntosh County Chief Deputy is on a one-week suspension after he allowed one off-duty jailer and seven off-duty deputies to drink beer at the jail during Hurricane Matthew.

Chief Deputy George Trexler was on administrative leave last Wednesday through Friday. On Monday, he began his suspension for one week without pay.

His picture is missing from the McIntosh County Sheriff's Office website.

Sheriff Steve Jessup says the jail was in shutdown mode and the employees were off duty, riding out the storm.

The inmates were evacuated to the Bulloch County jail before Hurricane Matthew hit.

Sheriff Jessup says Trexler gave the deputies permission to drink beers in the sally port, a violation of policy. No alcohol is allowed in the building.

"He was there while some of it was going on. It wasn't really a big party, they just had a couple of beers before they shut down for the night," Sheriff Jessup said.

Sheriff Jessup will have a personal meeting with Trexler on Monday. He says Trexler will "probably be back on the job."
