SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - The Savannah Development and Renewal Authority welcomed a special guest speaker for its Urbanism Series.
Former Charleston Mayor Joe Riley spoke at the event on topics ranging from design to development to revitalization.
Hosts say he could not have come to town at a better time.
Riley, guiding his Charleston through Hurricane Hugo back in 1989. He was widely praised for getting the city cleaned up quickly and back on its feet.
"Cities need a strategic plan and to tend to the challenges that are most important and do that well, have the, accept the great benefit of the tourism industry and then make sure you wisely manage it so that it benefits the citizens who live here," said Riley.
Originally there was a $10 charge for Thursday's program. That was before Hurricane Matthew tore through. The event was then made free for all to attend.
Proceeds from tickets sold will now be donated to Second Harvest of Coastal Georgia.
