SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - The Savannah Voice Festival held a community goodwill concert at Christ Church in Savannah, Thursday evening.
"This was a time that we typically go into the schools and provide outreaches, but we also concentrate on our needs to support those educational programs, so the plan was to have a fundraiser tonight, but of course Matthew had other plans for us. We decided this was not about us. This is about Savannah," said Maria Zouves, Executive Director of the Savannah Voice Festival.
It was a nice escape after Hurricane Matthew for folks. They were able to enjoy beautiful opera songs.
"In that time, I always feel like the best solace, the best way to escape from it is through the arts," she said.
Event organizers said the choice to host a free concert for the community was easy because they say they love Savannah and it is part of their hearts.
If you missed this performance or if you are ready for another one, they will be taking the stage again this weekend. There will be a repeat performance Sunday, Oct. 23, at the First Presbyterian Church on Hilton Head Island at 4 p.m.
