48th Brigade Leaves for Iraq

On Sunday, more than 4,000 troops from the 48th Brigade headed to the Middle East. On Sunday, more than 4,000 troops from the 48th Brigade headed to the Middle East.

The largest Georgia Army National Guard deployment since World War II is on its way to Iraq. On Sunday, more than 4,000 troops from the 48th Brigade said goodbye to their families before heading to the Middle East.

Many looked at pictures and other mementos while they waited at Hunter Army Airfield to board their flights; however, one soldier is bringing a real reminder of his family with him: his brother.

"My brother is also going with me to Iraq, explained Specialist Dmitri Rybakov. "He's in my platoon. He's not here right now because he's on another flight. I persuaded him into joining so I'm sure he's real happy about that right now."

The troops spent the last several months prior to their deployment training at the National Training Center in California. They will be gone for at least a year.
