SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - The Habersham Street YMCA has probably never been busier. Tons of people filled the parking lot as the YMCA partnered with Operation Feed Savannah on Wednesday.
The initiative led by State Representative Carl Gilliard drew a huge crowd.
People lined up to receive 1,500 free hot meals. Many of the families, like Annie West and her granddaughter, lost their homes during Hurricane Matthew.
They're calling Operation Feed Savannah a blessing.
"It was a blessing because a lot of people in Savannah don't have anywhere to stay. They don't have any food. I have seen people taking out the trash cans and stuff it's just terrible," said West.
Since Hurricane Matthew hit, Operation Feed Savannah has given out 8,200 hot meals in Chatham and Glynn counties.
As West and others picked up their hot meals, there was also free fruits and vegetables available.
Plus, the YMCA led fitness classes all day.
