SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - Community leaders and owners of the Rock n' Roll Marathon are excited for this year's modified course and the arrival of almost 18,000 runners.
The race is part of Rock and Roll's worldwide tour of marathons and half marathons. In its sixth year, race owners couldn't be happier with the turnout to Savannah.
"It's one of our critical cities. One of 33 worldwide, but it's one of our 10 best in the US, and a big tourism driver as well," said The Competitor Group President Josh Furlough.
Of course, you can't run without registration and a number. Hundreds of people lined up to get in when the doors opened around 3 p.m. at the Savannah International Trade and Convention Center.
Furlough estimates about 20 percent of them will be first time Rock n' Roll runners. The same number who'll be first time Savannah visitors.
The race comes at a great time of year for Savannah's economy, as well.
"It kicks off another month of tourism in our community, but more importantly, it gives so many people another month of work," said Joseph Marinelli, President, Visit Savannah.
