Students Build Home for Low Country Woman

Beaufort native Pearl Baker has lived her whole life in the Low Country and never owned a home. Until today. This morning at the Academy of Career Excellence in Okatie, the students who built Baker's transportable home presented it to her.

The project was a year in the making for the young men at the school. They put the home together nail by nail and wire by wire. Deep Well, a Beaufort United Way agency, donated the materials for the house.

Ms. Baker will be moving onto property next to her daughter Salena in Bluffton. She says the students are welcome to come over any Sunday for greens and macaroni.
