Good News: Malcolm Mitchell reads to students at Garden City Elementary

GARDEN CITY, GA (WTOC) - Former University of Georgia wide receiver, and current New England Patriot, Malcolm Mitchell was at Garden City Elementary Friday morning, reading his book "The Magician's Hat'' to students.

Mitchell struggled to read when he entered UGA, but joined a book club and taught himself to read at a college level. Through his Read With Malcolm Program, he shares his story with children and promotes reading.

The former Bulldog is partnering with attorney Ken Nugent to provide a copy of "The Magician's Hat" to every first grader in the Chatham County School District.

"It really is a tremendous opportunity to help out.  We've given out 3,700 books to 32 schools in Chatham County and if we can get these kids' reading and to love reading, we're going to get ahead of the game down here in Georgia and hopefully these kids will learn to love it and they'll use it throughout their lives," said Nugent.

Mitchell was on a bye week with the Patriots and had time to travel back to Georgia. Earlier this year, the Georgia Writer's Association selected Mitchell as the Children's Book Author of the Year.
