HANLEY HILLS, Mo. (KMOV.com) –A 32-year-old man is in critical condition after a church in Hanley Hills caught fire overnight.

Heavy smoke was seen coming from the Mt. Beulah Missionary Baptist Church on Racine starting around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Mid County Fire officials said flames were seen in the windows when they first arrived. Majority of the damage to the church was on the second floor, but the sanctuary and child care area also sustained smoke damage.

The injured church member suffered smoke inhalation during the fire.

"We are going to get together, we're going to pull together," Dr. E.G. Shields Jr., a pastor at the church, said. "I'm extremely relieved that it was not worse than what it was."

The St. Louis County Bomb and Arson investigative team were called to the scene, but the cause of the blaze is currently unknown.
