Sheriff's Office Gets Drug Lab on USCB Campus

A new partnership could help cut down on crime in the Low Country. In Beaufort County, the sheriff's office and the University of South Carolina Beaufort are joining forces.

USCB is giving the sheriff's office free office space in its science and technology building to house a regional drug analysis lab. As part of the partnership, the sheriff's office will now have a substation located on campus.

Sheriff PJ Tanner says it's a win-win situation. "There's a law enforcement presence here. We have a substation on property, which is a great deterrent. The fact we're going to have students moving on campus in September, the fact we have three times the space."

This extra space will give the sheriff's office more capabilities to help put more drug dealers and users behind bars. The old lab at the sheriff's office in Beaufort will be used for marijuana testing and evidence storage.
