SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - Traffic crashes - sometimes fatal - even a major traffic safety audit three years ago! Finally, signs of improvement to the traffic artery we call Interstate 516.
I have been in constant contact with the Georgia Department of Transportation for years and explain what you may have already seen along the highway.
Most of the improvements have been in the evening and overnight hours along the deadly curve of 516 near the Veterans Parkway. The six-foot barrier wall between east and westbound lanes is almost complete between the Veterans and Liberty Parkway.
We've seen it too many times drivers crashing and crossing into oncoming traffic.
"On the curves, we'll put the high service friction treatment; it helps the tires adhere to the road when it's raining, things like that. We're just trying to enhance all safety measures we can for all Georgia highways," said Georgia Department of Transportation Jill Nagel.
Once they finish the barrier wall, they'll work on the resurfacing. They hope to have the $6.2 million project finished before the end of the year.
