SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

An old cannonball was located on an excavation site near East Broad and Bay streets in Savannah.

According to officials, they came across the ball, about a foot in diameter, a few days ago. They initially thought it was a wrecking ball.

The SCMPD bomb unit and Fort Stewart were called. The item was deemed a Confederate ordnance.

"I was surprised. I really expected it to be French ordnance because the French and the Americans were firing at the British at that location in 1779. After we looked at it very closely, to know that it could have exploded, we probably should have stayed a little farther back, but you learn,” said research historian Jim Byous.

Officials placed a tire around it and filled the area with dirt. They then evacuated the area before doing a controlled detonation.
