BEAUFORT CO., SC (WTOC) -

Beaufort County law enforcement and first responders had a busy Wednesday night as they responded to two fatal accidents less than four hours apart.

The Burton Fire District has responded to two fatal accidents in just one week. The first happened last Wednesday near Shanklin Road where a 21-year-old riding his motorcycle was killed.

The district responded to one of two fatal accidents Wednesday night. The first was just before 7:30 p.m. near the intersection of Bruce K Smalls Road. That’s where highway patrol says 62-year-old Andrew Jenkins was walking in the median when he stepped into the southbound lane and was hit by a car.

The Burton Fire District says they've seen double the numbers from this time last year. The district identified some factors that could contribute to the increase.

"Increased traffic, of course, because it's the holidays. And also, we deal with the changing of the traffic pattern with the construction going on. I think nowadays a lot of it has to do with distracted driving people have, you know, playing on their phones it's so much more than it used to be,” said Burton Fire District Lt. Alex Murray.

The second fatal accident Wednesday night was on SC 170, where a bicyclist was hit while trying to cross the road. The drivers in both accidents were not injured and are not facing charges.

The identity of the victim in that second accident has not been confirmed yet. We will keep you updated as more details become available. It marks the sixth fatal bicycle accident in Beaufort County so far this year.

Memorial Day weekend is in full effect, which means that law enforcement is out in full force. The Department of Natural Resources is also stressing safety throughout the weekend.  Officers say that they'll be cracking down on the usual charges, such as those not wearing seatbelts, or drinking and driving.
