HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC (WTOC) -

Hilton Head Island Town Council is busy wrapping up Day 1 of their two-day workshop.

The workshop is an opportunity for council members to express their concerns and for the council to prioritize their agendas for the upcoming fiscal year. They started by taking a look at existing projects and priorities the town had before the hurricane. That includes things like the ongoing sewer project and the proposals for an art venue, but it also included big scale projects like the Circle to Circle and Coligny Area development.

Initially, Coligny Beach Park was going to be revamped to include a destination playground and children's museum. Construction of this project would have also lent way to road improvements, on-street parking, and renovations to current pathways. The contract was up for bid during the summer with hopes that work would have gotten underway here in the next few weeks, but the town's project manager says a hold on resources is causing a major delay.

"During the time of the storm, we actually had released solicitations that dealt with that pathway and the roadway work. The storm interrupted the pursuit of those solicitations, so we have dropped back. Staff is now mostly responding to disaster recovery; the debris removal mission. We do hope that we can restore some level of active status to the pathway component, probably first," said Scott Liggett, Project Manager, Town of Hilton Head.

The project manager says that phase probably won't begin until fall 2017 because it would simply be too hard to try and do it during peak season, over the summer.

Memorial Day weekend is in full effect, which means that law enforcement is out in full force. The Department of Natural Resources is also stressing safety throughout the weekend.  Officers say that they'll be cracking down on the usual charges, such as those not wearing seatbelts, or drinking and driving.
