SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - Helping first responders in the name of one who gave his life serving this community.
Tunnel to Towers Savannah, a race that memorializes firefighters who were lost on September 11, made a $5,000 donation today to the 200 Club. The donation was made in honor of Firefighter Michael Curry, who died while responding to a call on River Street two weeks ago.
WTOC's Tim Guidera, who helped bring Tunnel to Towers to Savannah, helped make the presentation to the organization that provides for the families of fallen first responders killed in the line of duty.
"Nationally, it has been a very difficult year, but the last two weeks in this area, we lost a member of the Savannah fire services, a dedicated member, and former military. We also lost a U.S. Marshal the day before that incident. We have a tremendous amount of support throughout the year, but this particular event, the Tunnel to Towers, allows us to have a nice boost," said 200 Club of Greater Savannah President Mark Dana.
One of the services the 200 Club provides is to create scholarships for the children of fallen first responders. Firefighter Curry is survived by a young son.
