CANDLER CO., GA (WTOC) - A new deputy took to the highways of Candler County on Monday and made history.
Dante Daniels graduated the police academy Friday and becomes the county's first black deputy. Sheriff John Miles says he made diversity a priority during his campaign this year.
Daniels, who previously worked as a jailer, says his focus is on service.
"I come from a military and law enforcement family. My brother is a police officer in Covington. So when I was given the opportunity by John (Miles), I took it," said Deputy Daniels.
"The diversity within our office should reflect the diversity within our community," said Candler County Sheriff John Miles.
Miles won the sheriff's position in a March special election. Since then, he's added the department's first Hispanic deputy and first school resource officer.
