We have new information on a robbery attempt that turned violent in Savannah. The name of the would-be robber who was shot by a store clerk has been released.
Willie Smith, 29, is in good condition at Memorial Health. Smith is believed to be one of three men who walked into Top of the Line Fashions and Accessories on West Bay Street yesterday and attempted to rob the store.
Witnesses say at least one of the three pulled a gun and demanded the clerks get on the floor. But one of the clerks pulled out his own gun and started firing, wounding Smith. The three took off.
Later, a vehicle matching the description of the car involved pulled up to Memorial Health and Smith was dropped off.
Police are still searching for the two other suspects. Anyone with information about the robbery and shooting is asked to call CrimeStoppers at 234.2020.
