Southside firefighters and police are investigating a suspicious blaze that destroyed a home late last night. Around 9:45pm, firefighters were called to a wooden house in the 900 block of Chevis Road. The building was engulfed in flames by the time they arrived.
The building ended up collapsing during the blaze.
Witnesses reported seeing someone running from the scene after the fire started. Police are investigating several leads, looking for a possible arsonist.
"There's no power to the structure, no gas lines and suddenly there's a large volume of fire," Assistant Chief Hugh Futrell of the Southside Fire Department. "That, in our estimation, leads us to think that maybe something happened out of the ordinary."
Fortunately, no one was in the vacant house and there were no injuries.
