First Youth Council Class Graduates

The very first class of the Savannah Youth Council graduated today. The youth council is made up of middle school students. There are a total of 53 members. Mayor Otis Johnson awarded certificates to 18 of them, because they will be moving on to high school next year.

During this past school year, the youth council learned the ins and outs of city government and took tours of important places in the city.

"We went to the Ralph Mark Gilbert Civil Rights Museum, the Telfair, we had speakers about interpersonal skills and learned about youth crime in the area," said youth council president Angela Coleman.

Many of the graduates say they are looking forward to joining the Chatham County Youth Commission, which is made up of high school students.
