Some shrimpers hauled in a bizarre catch yesterday near Lazaretto Creek. It was a very old, very corroded bomb. Experts say it wasn't any danger any more, and could date back as far as the Civil War, although it's probably from World War I.
The shrimper who snagged it was optimistic at first about his find.
"He wanted to know if he could get any money for it," said Pat Matthews of Chatham County. "He might try and catch another one. Shrimping's kind of tough right now."
The bomb squad from Savannah-Chatham police stayed with the old bomb until a crew from Fort Stewart could come claim it. They say it will likely end up in a scrap heap.
