CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -

A statewide Red Flag Fire Alert is now in effect as of Friday morning.

A Red Flag Fire Alert is a wildfire danger warning issued by the SC Forestry Commission, according to its website. The alert serves as an advisory from forestry officials to avoid any outdoor burning.

Higher wind gusts combined with low humidity over the next few days can create the potential for outdoor fires to spread rapidly, officials say.

State Forestry Commission Fire Chief Darryl Jones called Thursday one of the busiest fire days they have seen in a while with more than 50 active fires statewide.

“We’re asking that people voluntarily postpone any burning they’ve planned because the wind speeds and relative humidity over much of the state through the weekend will create an elevated potential for fire danger,” Jones said.

A Red Flag Fire Alert does not prohibit outdoor burning as long as all other state and local regulations are followed, the commission's site states. However, a Red Flag Fire Alert does trigger certain county or local ordinances that restrict outdoor fires, so residents should contact their local fire departments to check whether such restrictions apply in their areas.

The alert will remain in effect until the commission lifts it. Fire response teams will continuously monitor the situation throughout the weekend.
