If you get your electricity from one of our area's EMC's, be on the lookout. High-tech scammers could target you.
Canoochee EMC contacted us that someone has called customers to tell them they're being disconnected for non-payment and they must pay over the phone. Customers say the phone identifies the call as coming from the EMC and they have an elaborate call waiting system.
Co-op officials tell us they don't use phone calls this way and customers should be aware.
“If you have any doubt, look at the number on your power bill, or call the number on your latest statement,” said Joe Sikes, with Canoochee EMC.
He says anyone that gets one of these bogus calls can contact their EMC or local law enforcement.
