SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - Kids at Memorial Health are shaking things up for St. Patrick's Day week. Instead of the traditional sweet, green shakes, they whipped up some healthy green smoothies.
"We are making green smoothies for St. Patrick's Day. It's a healthy take on a Shamrock Shake," said Brittany Lightsey, a children's wellness coordinator.
Spinach, bananas and pineapple are just a few of the ingredients in this smoothie.
"We love our greens which are particularly festive around St. Patrick's Day but leafy greens are a great source of vitamin K, vitamin A," said Lightsey. "They help your eyes see better, prevent cancer so just one of our most nutrient-dense foods."
The smoothie is also low in sugar compared to many other popular drinks.
"We know that a typical Shamrock Shake you might see out on the market could have up to 93 grams of sugar. The only added sugar we added today was the agave."
Healthy? Yes. However, will the kids and teens actually drink it."
"I was like, 'Green? Ugh, not really," admits 15-year-old Merci Albright. "But,
it was really good. I would try it at home."
This St Patrick's Day, Memorial Health has a healthy challenge for you and your kids.
"Challenge yourself to try a new green food this week," said Lightsey.
