Suspect arrested following chase on JR Allen Pkwy Saturday night

COLUMBUS, GA -

News Leader 9 has learned new details about a police chase, turned multiple car accident which happened around 8:30 p.m. Saturday.

According to the Georgia State Patrol, a 2005 Honda Accord was traveling east in the westbound lanes of JR Allen Parkway, attempting to flee from a marked Alabama State Patrol vehicle, that had its lights and sirens on.

The driver of the Honda Accord, a 27-year-old John Smith of Columbus, sideswiped a 1999 Toyota and later hit the front of a 2011 Hyundai Sonate SE.

Smith was injured and was transported to Midtown Medical Center. He was charged with DUI, reckless driving, not wearing a seat belt, and serious injury by vehicle. He is still being held in the Muscogee County Jail.

Smith is set to appear in court Tuesday at 9 a.m., Thursday at 8 a.m., and Friday at 2 p.m.

Smith’s passenger was injured and transported to Midtown Medical Center.

The driver of the Toyota was not injured, but the driver of the Hyundai was injured and was transported to Midtown Medical Center for his injuries.
