BLUFFTON, SC (WTOC) -

The Bluffton Police Department has confirmed that a deadly propane tank explosion happened Sunday night in Bluffton.

Officials say one person died after a propane tank exploded outside of a residence in the Hampton Lake community around 7:30 p.m.

Police say the victim was Joseph Michaelcewicz, 70. Michaelcewicz was not responsive when they arrived on scene.

A witness, Bruce Nassimbeni, reported to police that he was across the lake fishing when the explosion happened. He and his wife jumped into their vehicle and drove over to where the explosion took place.

He found Michaelcewicz laying down on the back porch of the home with a head wound and was not conscious. Nassimbeni's wife began CPR on him.

Bluffton Fire and Rescue showed up and then took over the scene.

Police noticed that a gas grill was lying on the floor of the back porch, as well as a portion of the countertop that was to the right of the grill. A portion of the porch wall was lying on the ground. There was other debris covering the area, including some in the lake at the back of the residence.

Police were not able to interview the victim's wife because she had left the scene and was with Michaelcewicz.

The incident remains under investigation at this time.
