SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Chatham County Patrolman Alex Hodgson died in the line of duty 41 years ago today.

To honor him, Savannah Small Cakes Shop - located on Hodgson Memorial Drive - handed out free cupcakes to law enforcement. An empty table surrounded by family photos were set up in Hodgson's memory.

The cake shop owner, along with Hodgson's brother say this is all about educating people about the sacrifice police officers make every day.

"This was a person that didn't have to put themselves in the line of danger to protect the community, but that's what they're doing,” said Tom Hodgson, brother of Alex.

"He was a Chatham, at that time, it was Chatham Police Department officer who lost his life in the line of duty. And I don't want people to forget,” said Savannah Small Cakes Shop owner, Brenda Vines.

Officer Hodgson was only 24 years old when he was killed. Vines says she did not know him or his family but felt compelled to honor him today.
