EMANUEL CO., GA (WTOC) -

The Georgia State Patrol and Emanuel County Sheriff's Office confirmed a deputy-involved wreck occurred in Emanuel County near U.S. 1 and Hwy 57 Monday night.

According to Emanuel County Sheriff J. Tyson Stephens, at approximately 9 p.m., deputies with the Emanuel County Sheriff's Office became involved in a car chase to assist Jefferson County deputies after they tried to stop a speeding vehicle traveling southbound on US Hwy 1, just north of the Louisville city limits. The driver fled from Jefferson County officers for several miles, leading them into Emanuel County at excessive speeds. As the chase neared the intersection of US Hwy 1 and GA Hwy 57 West, the fleeing driver lost control of the vehicle and collided with the pursuing Emanuel County deputy, causing both to crash.

The deputy, fleeing driver and a passenger in the suspect’s vehicle were flown by helicopter to hospitals in Savannah and Augusta.

The investigation of the incident is ongoing and is being conducted by the Emanuel County Sheriff's Office, Georgia State Patrol and Jefferson County Sheriff's Office.
