BLUFFTON, SC (WTOC) -

The Greater Bluffton area is still discussing the future of a local golf course.

Last year, the owners of Hilton Head National proposed rezoning the property from its current residential and rural zoning to mixed use, but the suggestion was met with much opposition. In fact, last month, the town of Bluffton submitted its formal resolution against the project.

At Wednesday night’s town hall meeting, residents expressed their concerns about three main items: traffic, density and the effect the project will have on the environment.

Now, the property has 300 acres of rural use zoning that the property owners want to turn into mixed use to accommodate a hotel, housing and an adventure park.

Council members expressed how redevelopment would bring the property up to code regarding storm water management. Items that weren't in place 30 years ago when the property started.

But it comes down to a compromise between the property owner and those that must live around it.

"There is also an opportunity and a commitment to protect your community. It's everybody's right to have the privilege to live in a wonderful place but also take the personal pride,” said Bluffton resident Tim Moraghan.

Local officials plan to continue the discussions in these town hall meetings to get public input on the project.

There is currently a petition online for those interested in stopping the Hilton Head National Project.
