Out of 35 charter schools in the state of South Carolina, a school in Beaufort is one of three recognized for its student achievement and academic growth.

Bridges Preparatory School opened four years ago with about 300 students. They're now at double that and are only expecting the school to grow.

The recognition from the South Carolina Charter School District looked at things like enrollment, growth, student achievement and testing scores.

The school's middle and elementary students exceeded state standards in English and math last school year.

"All of our students have Chromebooks,” said Dee Matthews, Chair, Bridges Preparatory School Board of Directors. “They have access to the tablets; they work on those. Technology is very important in the classroom. As far as the award from the district, I think it's how we manage our money. We do not get the normal funding that public schools get."

Bridges Preparatory School only receives state funding and generous donations from the community. They're holding their annual shrimp and grits fundraiser month and are working on building a brand new school that will run kindergarten to 12th grade.
