BEAUFORT, SC (WTOC) -

Captain Albert L. Schlegel, an airman who was missing for more than 70 years, was laid to rest on Thursday at the Beaufort National Cemetery.

Captain Schlegel was killed by the Germans back in 1944 during World War II. However, his remains weren't found until 2015 and weren't positively identified until later in 2016. His nephew, retired Air Force Colonel Perry Nuhn says this not a sad, but rather happy time because the family now has closure.

WTOC: "How are you able to find so much joy in this?"

Col. Nuhn: "You know, exactly what happened. That's the happiness. You know that you're putting his remains to rest. Your thoughts of someone who died are the happy thoughts. You don't want to think about a lot of sad thoughts."

Col. Nuhn accepted the Purple Heart Award in Captain Schlegel's honor.
