COLUMBIA, SC (WTOC) - There must be something in the water in the state of South Carolina.
Last summer Coastal Carolina won the College World Series. Early in January Clemson won the Football National Championship, and this past weekend both the Gamecock men's and women's basketball teams appeared in the Final Four of their respective tournaments.
Coach Frank Martin and his men's team fell just a bit short, losing to Gonzaga on Saturday. But the women's team, coached by Dawn Staley, couldn't be stopped, capping their championship run with a convincing win over SEC rival Mississippi State.
While there's never a bad time to be a Carolina Gamecock, or call the State of South Carolina home, now is an especially great time.
College athletics are big business, there's no question, but that's a debate for another time. Now is the time for the Palmetto State to puff out its chest a bit and take tremendous pride in what these student-athletes accomplished.
Consider this: there's a way to win with class and dignity, and that's what the Gamecocks did on Sunday. They played hard and inspired basketball and were rewarded for their effort. The men's team and their coach also displayed tremendous class and dignity even in defeat and should be equally proud.
You see, only the women's team got to cut down the nets this weekend, but both teams finished their tournaments as champions, as did everyone on both sides of the Savannah River who rooted for them.
