HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC (WTOC) -

Hilton Head town leaders are focusing their efforts on several key projects as they head into their busiest time of year.

The town's Capital Improvements Program Committee held a meeting on Monday.

They met to discuss projects for the upcoming fiscal year. Several of their top priorities are focused right here in the popular Shelter Cove Towne Center area.

Improving and expanding the island's pathway network for pedestrians and bicyclists is their top priority, focusing on Shelter Cove. Back in February a bicyclist was struck and killed by a vehicle in a roadway of one of the area's intersections.

They plan to work with the Bicycle Advisory committee to improve crosswalks and easements. They also discussed roadway improvements for traffic and re-doing the north and south entrances into the shopping center.

"The attractiveness that it provides there,” said Scott Liggett, Director of Public Projects and Facilities. “The commercial aspect, the public aspect, event opportunities there. It serves certainly as a focal point for the central part of the island. We’re always mindful of the attractiveness of the pathways as they exist here on the island. Making sure they’re as safe as we can make them.”

The next step is for these recommendations to go to Planning Commission to discuss at their meeting. That’s happening on April 19th.
