High praise for extremely active volunteers at a festive luncheon in their honor today at Savannah Station. Members of a volunteer force more than 600 strong gave more than 65,000 hours to the community over the last year through the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program, or RSVP, affiliated with the Economic Opportunity Authority of Savannah-Chatham County.
"They volunteer tutoring children, delivering home-delivered meals, they volunteer with the Better Business Bureau, the Community Cardiovascular Council," said project director Debbie W. Walker. "Many of the nonprofits in the community. They volunteer at over 45 different sites."
The theme for the recognition luncheon was "Volunteers are Beary Huggable." In keeping with that, a Best Bear competition was held.
Chatham County Commission chairman Pete Liakakis and our own Sonny Dixon were among the judges. They were all winners.
