BURTON, SC (WTOC) -

A body has been found in a pond at Burton Wells Park in Burton.

Officials say at approximately 8 a.m. Thursday morning, Sheriff's Office deputies responded to a report of a deceased person submerged in a pond in Burton Wells Park.

The victim has been identified as 22-year-old Javonte Colleton, according to his family and sheriff's office officials. Colleton was reported missing by his family Wednesday night around 11 p.m.

Colleton's family was on the scene when his body was removed. They tell us he was paralyzed from the waist down and frequented the park to watch the men play basketball. They also recovered his motorized wheelchair.

They say the last time they saw him was Wednesday around 3 p.m. when he boarded the bus to go into town.

“The Palmetto Breeze bus picked him up and dropped him off out here. We got the call from people that he was playing basketball. We didn’t know he was by the pond. We don’t know, [there is] no reason he should have been over there,” said Takeisha Sumpter, a cousin.

As of this time, the cause and manner of Colleton's death are not known. During Colleton's autopsy Friday, pathologist found no signs of trauma. The Medical Universty of South Carolina says toxicology studies are now being performed.  The circumstances surrounding his disappearance and death remain under investigation.

It’s a sad time for the family but they remember him as happy and caring. And despite his disability,  he was always the life of the party.

“When I go to his house, if he sees his cousin and them outside he wants to get up and go outside. Wants to play with the little kids and laugh and joke,” said Sumpter.

The family says he was paralyzed in a motorcycle accident five years ago and this was one of his favorite spots because they live right down the road.
