SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - The Savannah community has lost a giant. Joe Murray Rivers died Wednesday.
For 20 years, Rivers served as a Chatham County commissioner.
He's credited with helping to change the whole public transportation system in Chatham County. He fought to make sure that transportation would be available to everyone. In fact, CAT named its transit center after Rivers who also served as CAT's interim director.
He also served on several boards that help children.
If you ever asked him how he was doing, the former Marine was known for always responding by saying, "It's the best day of my life!"
A public viewing will be held Tuesday from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. at Adams Funeral Home followed by the rosary from 6 p.m. until 7 p.m. at St. Benedict the Moore Catholic Church.
