BURTON, SC (WTOC) -

A Burton Deputy Fire Chief saved two kayakers from the Harbor River yesterday.

The Burton Fire District responded to a report of four kayakers in distress who overturned in the water at the end of Harding Street and were unable to swim. Only one of the kayakers was wearing a life vest.

Burton firefighters spotted two kayakers, a male and a female, who were in the water about 75 feet from the dock that overlooked the Harbor River. Burton Deputy Fire Chief Tom Webb also responded to the call from his home, which was near the scene. Webb waded through the marsh to the river and swam to the kayakers.

Firefighters assisted the deputy chief in his rescue efforts, throwing him 100 feet of rescue rope from the dock to reel him. The chief kept the male afloat while also holding onto the female.

The four kayakers received medical attention at the scene but did not need to be transported to the hospital. Beaufort Marine Rescue also answered the call for assistance and helped in retrieving the two kayaks that were left in the water.
