Good News: Local student wins G.O.A.L award

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - A Savannah Tech student has been named Georgia's Technical College System's top student of the year.

Skylar Huggett, a welding and joining student, has been award the Georgia Occupational Award of Leadership by Governor Nathan Deal.

She received her award at a ceremony in the Grand Hyatt Atlanta, along with a brand-new Kia Optima.

She tells us that technical education can bring big opportunities to anyone who works hard.

"I have now chosen technical education, and I only wish that I had started there to begin with. It's the biggest honor, I have so much passion, and I can't wait to speak to high schoolers at graduations to the entire state and country, I hope, about how impactful and how lucrative technical education truly can be," said Huggett.

Skylar will spend the next year as an ambassador for the Georgia Technical College System.

She finishes her welding and joining training in May.
