PORT ROYAL, SC (WTOC) -

It's been a week since we announced the pending purchase of the Port of Port Royal.

It took more than a decade for a promising sale to be brought to the table, and now, both the town and developers are excited about the future of the area.

In previous years, the property had been under four contracts that all fell through, with asking prices between the $15-20 million range. After the property was appraised again and a more reasonable price tag of $7 million was offered, a group of people represented by Van Cleve Enterprises Incorporated jumped at the opportunity.

We chatted with one of the people behind the sale, who told us what the future could hold for the abandoned port.

"It's permitted for a 225 slip marina. Obviously, we're going to execute that. You pull that together. There is a certain amount of residential that is required to tie in and we're going to fulfill that need. Restaurants, boutiques, and other connections to the water are all naturally part of the development plan," said Whit Suber, Home Shop Realty.

The developers are also pushing to add a component that is not hospitality or tourist driven, so adding some office spaces is on the agenda. Closing on the property isn't expected until early August.
