CHATHAM CO., GA (WTOC) -

Fishing is no longer permitted from the Observation Deck at the Coffee Bluff Marina.

Signs and caution tape have now been put up. City staff decided to ban fishing, citing repeated incidents of damage to personal property and even animals.

District 6 Alderman Tony Thomas is speaking out on the issue, posting this to Facebook:

Today I met with City Staff to discuss issues that we have been dealing with concerning fishing at Coffee Bluff Marina. Staff has determined that after repeated incidents of damage to personal property and even animals; after repeated issues with boaters trying use the marina and fisherman unwilling to reel in lines and blocking the channel; after use of open flame on the deck; after reports of threats and violence that could have turned into a very unwanted and unacceptable outcome for our area, the decision has been reached to suspend fishing from the Observation Deck.
While I understand that this may not be welcome news to some, I am in full support of the staff decision and will be working with staff over the next couple of weeks to implement all the necessary changes. It is unfortunate that we have had to reach this decision due to the continued bad behavior of some that won't be considerate, respectful, and follow the rules but this action is necessary to prevent any more serious event from occurring at this wonderful city facility or in our Southside neighborhoods.
The Observation Deck will continue to be open and residents and visitors alike are encouraged to use it for observation and crabbing. In addition, the Marina is in full operation and the Coffee Bluff Park offers a great opportunity for a family outing including a picnic area and playground for the kids.
I am exploring other opportunities for recreation at this time to include additional fishing opportunities for our residents on the Southside and in Savannah.
