SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Georgia Route 25 will be closed to traffic and detoured for two weekends beginning Friday, April 28 and Friday, May 12 for a rehabilitation project on the Houlihan Bridge over the Savannah River.

The Georgia Department of Transportation says the closure period will be in effect from 7 p.m. Friday until 6 a.m. Monday.

The Industrial Company of Savannah will perform maintenance work on this historic turn-style tussle bridge - the only operational bridge of its kind in Georgia. A 23-mile detour will be in place during the closures. They are as follows:

  • Motorists traveling on South Carolina Route 170 will merge into U.S. 17 northbound to I-95; take I-95 South to Exit 109/Georgia Route 21; turn left onto Georgia Route 21/Augusta Road; turn left onto Georgia Route 30/Bonnybridge Road; then turn right onto Georgia Route 25/Coastal Highway southbound where detour ends.
  • Motorists traveling on Georgia Route 25/Coastal Highway northbound will detour left onto Georgia Route 30/Bonnybridge Road; turn right onto Georgia Route 21/Augusta Road; take I-95 North to Exit 5/US 17; turn left onto US 17 South to South Carolina Route 170 where detour ends.

Georgia Route 25 will reopen early if the work is completed ahead of schedule or could possibly be closed longer if weather delays the work. Savannah River marine traffic will be halted during weekend closures.
