Police aren't charging Phillip Lewis for his part in last week's accident that shut down the McTeer Bridge. Blood-alcohol tests show that Lewis was not intoxicated at the time of the wreck.
Police say Lewis crossed the center line and slammed head on into an oncoming tractor-trailer. A helicopter flew him to Memorial Health.
A few minutes before that wreck, a sheriff's deputy had pulled Lewis over for swerving on the road. The deputy gave Lewis a warning and let him go. The crash happened less than a quarter mile down the road.
The sheriff's department suspended the deputy while they investigated.
Lewis meanwhile remains in critical condition.
