A death investigation is underway after a student died after school at Creekside High School.

Creekside High School is located on Herndon Road in Fairburn.

Officials tell CBS46, the 15-year-old victim collapsed in the high school's locker room.

Susan Hales, a spokesperson with Fulton County Schools, issued the following statement:

Fulton County Schools is saddened by the heartbreaking news of the death of Kamari McGowen. Kamari was a 9th grade student at Creekside High and died unexpectedly after being transported to the hospital from football conditioning Monday evening. The cause of death has not been confirmed. Creekside High had counselors at school on Tuesday and as long as necessary to assist students and teachers who are experiencing grief. Our thoughts and prayers are with the McGowen family.

The Fulton County Medical Examiner's Office said test are still being conducted on the victim to establish the cause of death.

The state of Georgia has guidelines in place to keep athletes hydrated during high school football practices. Teams must provide at least three water breaks per hour.

Trainers must monitor the weather using what's called a Wet Bulb Globe Temperature Source. It measures heat stress in direct sunlight to see if conditions are too dangerous to practice.

We are continuing to gather details at this time. Stay tuned for the latest developments.
