SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - A family has lost their home in an afternoon fire on Walterboro Road, just off Chevis Road in Chatham County.
The assistant fire chief for Southside Fire and EMS says the call came in a little before 4 p.m. There was some uncertainty when firefighters first got here if everyone was out safely, but we have learned the family of five is safe and unharmed.
Still no word on what started the fire.
Crews were able to contain the fire quickly, but the effort to bring water to the scene has been tedious, with multiple trucks having to shuttle it into this non-hydrant area from a hydrant about five minutes away.
Getting more hydrants in areas like this is a priority for fire and county officials alike.
"It's not something that's going to be cured overnight, it didn't happen overnight. But we are actively, we as a county, are looking at what we can do to protect the citizens better," said Southside Fire Department Assistant Chief Wayne Noha.
Water Utility Management provides water out here and I just spoke to their COO earlier Friday about those talks to get hydrants in non-hydrant areas.
We'll continue to stay on top of that issue.
